College faculty member named 2014 Outstanding Educator

Christina Wilson, a Nursing instructor at Anoka Technical College, will be honored as an Outstanding Educator for 2014 by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) Board of Trustees in April.

The award acknowledges and rewards exceptional individual professional accomplishment and encourages ongoing excellence. Nominated by Anoka Technical College President Kent Hanson, Wilson will be among 30 MnSCU faculty members honored April 23 at an award ceremony to highlight excellence in teacher. Each outstanding educator will receive a hand-crafted silver medallion and framed certificate.

“Christina’s fierce loyalty and responsibility to her students reflects the values of Anoka Technical College,” said President Kent Hanson.

To be recognized as Outstanding Educators, nominees must submit portfolios that demonstrate consistently exemplary teaching, and evidence of additional contributions to student learning and other teaching-related achievements, such as advising, mentoring, pedagogical development, and service to students, their college or university, and to the system.

Wilson has been a Nursing Assistant and Practical Nursing instructor at Anoka Technical College since 1991. She currently serves as a co-chair of the college’s Policy and Procedure Committee and as a past and current member of the college’s Strategic Enrollment Planning Task Force. Her passion for education is also reflected in her service to community. She has served on a K-12 public school board as an elected official for the past 17 years. Wilson views patient care as a “sacred practice” and that feeling translates to how she manages her classrooms.

As Wilson put it, “I take seriously the thought that each student may see me as a role model or, at the least, as an authority on our subject. By displaying appropriate, authentic interest in students, the classroom becomes more of a community that lends itself well to the cooperative nature of group problem solving that typifies most classroom days.”

No more than 75 faculty members are designated as Outstanding Educators in any year from among the system's more than 8,000 full-time faculty.
