EMS program revamps to better serve public safety providers and new trainees

Anoka Technical College Emergency Medical Services (EMS) certificate program has undergone changes to better serve public safety providers as well as people new to the field of emergency patient care.

The former, single 16-credit program is now two tracks:

Track 1: a single nine-credit semester especially geared toward training public safety providers and people new to the field of emergency medical services.

Track 2: builds on the initial nine credits with a second, 10 credit semester for those who want to work as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), advance their level education as an EMT or transfer into a more comprehensive program with one of Anoka Tech’s Metro Paramedic Partners including Century College, Inver Hills Community College and St. Cloud Technical and Community College.

“We are very excited to be offering this new two track format for the EMS program,” said new program director and instructor, Brad Wright. “We are hoping it will serve our region’s public safety providers and also introduce younger people, right out of high school, in their senior of high school, or in college, to this career field.”

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are found in many careers across the nation. The EMS system encompasses a wide field of people who respond to emergencies in many different arenas. EMTs are multi-skilled emergency care providers, dedicated to patient care in emergency situations.

Successful completion of Anoka Tech’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program:

  • prepares students to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician computer-based exam.
  • registers the student with the American Heart Association for the Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider card.
  • prepares students to take the State of Minnesota practical skills exam for Emergency Medical Technician professionals.
