By completing this program, students will achieve the following learning outcomes.  

1. Prepare entry-level EMS providers to be employable upon completion
2. Provide up-to-date EMS education to all interested parties
3. Be a sound, responsible partner to stakeholders in the EMS industry
4. Create pathways of transferability to higher level EMS Education Programs
5. Manage the finances of the program in a cost-effective, prudent manner

Minnesota Law requires that any person who provides services that involve direct contact with patients and/or residents at a health care facility licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health; have a background study conducted by the state. An individual who is disqualified from having direct patient contact as a result of the background study, and whose disqualification is not set aside by the Commissioner of Health, will not be permitted to participate at a clinical site. The student has the right to request reconsideration of the disqualification. For consideration to continue in the program the student must request reconsideration and provide a copy of such request. The student is responsible for requesting the commissioner to reconsider the disqualification.

Students can choose to complete this program part-time. Part-time students will take longer to complete their program than students who follow the full-time sequence listed on the official program guide (see the program guide PDF under the LINKS section to the right). Because every course may not be offered each semester, it is important for part-time students to reach out to their faculty advisors for help in planning their long-term, part-time course sequence.

All Students completing the Emergency Medical program must complete all courses with a grade of “C” or higher.

The Anoka Technical College Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program follows the National DOT curriculum and is  approved by the State of Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB).

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and are found in many careers across the nation and beyond. The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) hires encompasses all of those that respond to emergencies situations. EMTs are entry level EMS providers capable of performing life-saving interventions within their defined scope of practice.

Partnerships between the college and emergency health care industries further enhance the knowledge and skills of our students. With advanced training, students become more marketable as emergency providers in the emergency healthcare field. Education as an emergency medical responder (EMR), emergency medical technician (EMT) or an advanced emergency medical technician  (AEMT) can lead to a satisfying and fulfilling profession in the emergency medical system and enhances many careers throughout our nation’s workforce.

Wage information is available from the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. 

EMED 1113, EMED 1114, and NREMT or/and Current State of Residency EMT Certification is a prerequisite for the other EMED courses.

Some courses may require appropriate test scores or completion of basic math, basic English and/or reading courses with a "C" or better.

The Anoka Technical College EMS curriculum is designed to help prepare students to sit for the professional licensure exam for Minnesota. At this time, Anoka Technical College is unable to make a determination if the EMS program meets the licensing requirement for any state or US protectorate besides Minnesota. You will want to contact the licensing board in which state you intend to pursue licensure for their requirements, below we provide a link to a list of each states licensing board.
