Community Social Services instructor publishes book "#ALLDONE"

A new book by Dr. Zakia Robbins, an instructor of Community Social Services at Anoka Technical College, entitled “#ALLDONE: A R.E.A.L. Practical Guide To Go From College Student To Graduate” was released on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Designed to help college students achieve graduation while staying on top of their professional work and social commitments, the book offers students a guide to daily life.

To write the book, Robbins drew from her own experience studying for several advanced degrees, as well as her research in community social services. She has earned a bachelor’s degree in dance education, a master’s degree in human services administration, a doctorate in organizational leadership and, most recently, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction.

“I actually wrote the book while I was studying for my Master of Science,” said Robbins. “I wanted to help everyone with everything. My goal was to share simple techniques to manage tasks, inside and outside of school.”

Known for her ability to inspire and motivate others to attain their goals, Robbins is a therapist by trade. She teaches people how to identify and resolve the specific behavioral and task management barriers that prevent them from being successful.

“To be successful, you have to organize your life,” said Robbins. “We have a lot of students who work multiple jobs, they have parents they are caring for, or they have children in school. When you’re that busy, something is going to fall by the wayside.”

Her book is written in a conversational tone, and the pages are interactive. It’s designed to help readers stay on track in every aspect of their life, while maintaining a work-life balance. The acronym in the title stands for Realistic, Easy, Attainable and Livable. Inside, Robbins offers sage advice, like writing tasks down and allocating time for everything – even the daily commute.

“For me, I come from an urban setting where many people don’t go to college. When I decided I wanted to go to college, I aligned myself with people who could support me and encourage me in the right direction,” said Robbins.

After growing up in north Philadelphia, in a family where neither her parents nor her grandparents had a college education, Robbins knows it takes determination for students to finish a college degree.

“Having been in their position and seeing what it takes, I hope my book will help first-generation college students get to graduation,” she said.
