Anoka Technical College’s EMS and Paramedic Programs to be featured at Minnesota State Day at the Capitol

Minnesota State Capitol

On Monday, Feb. 24, 2020 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, Anoka Technical College will participate in Minnesota State Day at the Capitol.

The event celebrates extraordinary education and exceptional student success within the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities.

To help illustrate this extraordinary education, Anoka Tech’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Paramedic programs were selected to be highlighted at the event. Faculty and students in the program will be at the rotunda so attendees have an opportunity to see some of the state-of-the-art equipment used to give students hands-on learning experiences in the classroom. These experiences translate directly into situations students would encounter in the field.

Therese Minwegen, a 2017 EMS program graduate that returned to Anoka Tech to be a member of the first cohort of the new Paramedic program, has been able to take the technical training in the classroom and clinical courses and apply her experience to her work every day as an EMT with North Memorial.

“My favorite class at Anoka Tech was my Advanced Life Support (ALS) clinical course. This course allowed me to use the knowledge that I had obtained through other EMS-related courses in the real world on an ambulance. I was able to learn hands-on how to run a 911 call, talk to and treat actual patients using skills that had be previously taught in the classroom. My preceptor was awesome. To this day, I still refer to experiences and advice that he gave me now as I work full-time on an ALS ambulance,” stated Minwegen.

Along with the opportunity to experience some of the educational opportunities students receive at the college, the event will be an opportunity to educate attendees on the current legislative request.

If funded, Anoka Tech along with aligned school Anoka-Ramsey Community College, will receive funds crucial to asset preservation. Funds will be used to upgrade electrical systems, roofs and building exteriors.
